WALK & TALK THERAPY

Where clients can breathe, talk and move through the challenges they face

What is walk and talk therapy?
Walk and talk therapy is similar to traditional therapy, except that instead of sitting in a counselling room,  the client and therapist are walking outside while talking about issues.

We all know that physical activity is really great for you, not only for your body, but for your brain and your emotional well-being. It reduces unpleasant feelings and helps you feel more of the pleasant ones  like happiness, calmness and feelings of  vitality.

There are several reasons why walk and talk therapy is a great approach:

  • Walking outside in the fresh air and engaging with the environment around you can be mindful and grounding;

  • It can help clients get “unstuck” when confronting difficult issues. Some clients find it easier to start talking about their problems when they are walking side by side with a therapist, rather than when sitting in a counselling room;

  • It increases the capacity for creative and deeper ways of thinking; and

  • It can be a great way to jump start a fitness routine or an active lifestyle for adults and teenagers.

How does it work?

The first 3-6 sessions are conducted in the clinic or via Telehealth in order to assess the issues that the client is grappling with. Following this assessment phase, walk and talk sessions can begin. The sessions start and end at the clinic, and the therapy happens while walking around the surrounding streets. The final 10 minutes of each session are spent back at the clinic discussing next steps. Walk and talk sessions are weather dependent and may be subject to rescheduling (with 24 hours notice), or alternatively they can be conducted as a traditional therapy session at the clinic or via Telehealth.

Who is walk and talk therapy suited to?

Walk and talk therapy can be effective with people of all ages and can help with numerous problems. Suzette has helped people with a range of issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, eating issues, relationship issues and low self-esteem to make positive changes in their lives.
